With the Indian bus service Shuttl, for example, using audio for contactless ticketing means the app

can be used even by customers who don’t have NFC or Bluetooth-enabled phones.

NFC stands for Near-Field Communication  and used in Apple iphon's i pay that could detect a phone withiin 4 inhces. so security well.

Cash Mode is the most talked feature of Google Tez app. And it is perhaps the best feature too. Because it lets you make payments in only a couple of taps. All other things on the app are almost the same as other UPI apps. But cash mode is what makes Tez a unique UPI app

Google has introduced its Audio QR technology with Tez app. In Audio QR, one device communicates with other using audio signals. And this is the same case with Tez app. When you use cash mode, the device transmits ultrasound signals using the speaker. And the another device receives and reads these signals to identify the sender of these signals.

Steps to make payments using cash mode.

Launch the Tez app and log into it using the unlock method you have set.
Now swipe up the big white button at the middle that has Tez logo on it.
Tell the recipient to swipe down the same button on his/her phone.
After swiping, wait for 5-10 seconds until your phone reads the signals transmitted by recipient’s phone.
When your phone successfully reads the signals, it will take you the payments page.
Enter the amount and details of the payment and tap proceed to pay button.
Enter your UPI PIN and done. Your payment is now completed. Wasn’t it fast and easy?
The payer may ask your Google account name to confirm the account. Tell him/her your account name. When you receive the payment, the app will take you out of the cash mode automatically. You may also receive a notification about the payment completion.

Cash Mode works with any phone with a mic and speaker and Tez app installed, and doesn’t require an NFC chip. Google’s Audio QR technology is similar to Chirp, which also sends data encoded in ultrasonic audio.

Sending data encoded in audio has some unique advantages (and disadvantages)

It’s an engaging idea, sending data via audio, but using sound to do the job of Bluetooth or NFC comes with a unique set of pros and cons.

What is NFC?
https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/nfc-explained/

NFC stands for Near-Field Communication and allows phones, tablets, and laptops to share data with other NFC-equipped devices. The technology evolved from radio-frequency identification (RFID) tech. RFID is behind those security scan cards that get you into the office every day or bypass that tollbooth on your morning commute.

NFC is very much like RFID, but NFC is limited to communication within about four inches, which is why you have to hold your phone so close to the contactless reader if you’re using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. Most people consider NFC’s small radius a major security benefit and it’s one of the reasons that NFC is taking off as a secure alternative to credit cards. The technology can be used for more than making purchases at Bloomingdales, however. NFC can transfer data like videos, contact information, and photos between two NFC-enabled devices.
